Ward-Based High-Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen – the South-West experience (2018-2019)
Winter BTS 2019 and SOA 2019 Abstract
– 43 medical inpatients and 76 ITU patients were recruited from 9 centres across our region.
– The overall 30 day mortality following start of HFNO was 37% for medical inpatients and 28% for ITU
– 86% had an escalation status recorded before commencing HFNO
– Mortality associated with HFNO therapy in our study is similar to mortality of patients commenced on NIV (35%) which should inform clinical decision making, discussions and escalation planning.
